As I think about warmer weather to come, I envision sweet little birds singing and calling out to one another from tree branch to tree branch, thus my offering for January

*** B I R D *** (a wool-applique table mat)

This 100 percent wool piece is a "tweaked" version of Maggie Bonanomi's lastest design from her new book - Buttonwood Farm.

B I R D was designed to be a pillow, however I thought it would also make for a fun and unique table mat. The mat measures 24 inches wide x 10.5 inches tall. I added a triangle edging to both ends of the mat with buttons on the corner triangles to complete the look.

The color of the wool base fabric is "antique black" along with the backing piece. The rest of the wool used in this design is hand dyed and from my personal collection.

COLOR DESCRIPTION: The applique colors are rich, but sometimes hard to capture with the camera, so let me describe. I used a greenish-tan wool for the bird's body, a faded brick wool for the bird's belly, and a greenish, yet slightly blue color for the wing with a soft yellow/gold stripe. The color used for the bird's body is also the color used for the letters "B I R D" and the triangle edging is the same color as the bird's belly.

Whenever I stitch a Maggie Bonanomi design, I like to turn to my "neutral" wool thread for the applique work. I used Valdani (dark brown) pearl cotton floss to blanket stitch the border.
